Program Introduction
FREEDOM TO LOSE CONTROL TOGETHER WITH THE MANY
is an immersive performance experience in which we invite you to create and be part of a safe and inclusive space together in the given time and place. An informal dance party/meditative rave performance that is based on utopian ideas about the perfect society. Everyone is invited to surrender to rhythmic electronic music and to lose control together with the many. Audience member have a chance to choose what kind of participation they feel the most comfortable with (active participant, observed or switch whenever they feel like it). A space that gives the audience to be part of non pressure environment, by following the guidance of the performers and making decisions for themselves. Usually the performance lasts 3 hours with 4 blocks of possible entrance points. Every 45min it's a new group of audience entering and previous group leaving the space. Audience is invited to stay throughout all 3hours if they wish. Two performers hold the space throughout 3 hours. When performing in different spaces project might invite the local dance students or dancers to participate as performers. THE STRUCTURE AND TIMING IS ADJUSTABLE - dependant on the format and needs.
Concept of a long length performance, combined with elements of RAVE culture, creating an utopian, multifaceted society and inclusive space for minorities, where anyone is invited for an indefinite period of time. Our interest has been in working with site-specific performance that can be adapted and made fluid based on the space that it will start living in. Getting to know the space, its architecture and history, the influence of the past and its role in society, the possible use of the present and what it will be able to become at the moment of the realisation of the performance (event).
Our goal is to propose/create/facilitate:
An environment where everyone feels included and accepted.
Where dance exists not only in the performers bodies.
The performative structure, which any viewer could easily follow and at the same time would give the opportunity to become an involved participant, the boundary between the roles of viewer and performer dissapears, and therefore the audience becomes part of the performance and the space. Freedom and security. Each participant of the performance determines for themselves how much they want to get involved and at what point they want to leave the structure of the performance.
This work is important to us because it does not leave a physical print in the space or around itself. It's a process of bringing society and communities that are part of it together. It's everyone's open-mindedness and responsibility towards decision making but never a pressure of needing to be in a space in a certain way.
In terms of Want to Dance festival we propose a partial introduction of our concept from 30 to 45 min long ( in the average length of one set of audience entrance out of four) and a partial team representation - one of two performance facilitator - Laura Gorodko.
For this performance to happen smooth we would like to collaborate with one local Taiwanese performer with good English language knowledge so the instructions from the facilitator Laura can be translated to local language and the whole performance experience can be inclusive for everyone.
ACCESSIBILITY: Accessible for audiences with mobility impairment; Accessible for deaf and hard of hearing audiences
Implemented as part of the White Night Forum of Contemporary Culture with the financial support of the Riga City Council and the Australian Embassy in Latvia
