The intertidal zone, shaped by constant and dramatic environmental shifts, compels organisms to develop distinctive forms and diverse survival strategies. Standing at the crossroads of ocean and land, it also symbolizes the dynamic balance between humanity and nature.

In this performance, we deliberately move away from a human (land)-centric perspective. By examining the ecology of the intertidal zone, local gathering customs and taboos, and the lives of seafaring communities, we confront the physical and mental challenges posed by an overly urbanized society. Through a dialogue of bodily movement, contemporary circus elements, and spatial awareness, the work seeks to form a temporary, extra-terrestrial (off-land) “pact” with the body.

Our movement design begins with an experimental process that observes and incorporates non-human traces and dynamics within the intertidal zone—from the physical forces and trajectories of waves, rocks, and driftwood, to the behavioral patterns and varied physical characteristics of its marine organisms.

Ultimately, we hope to guide audiences beyond conventional human (land)-centric thinking. By engaging with the transformative nature of performance, viewers can experience the multifaceted vitality of the natural world firsthand. The flexibility, resilience, and adaptability displayed by intertidal landscapes and creatures not only reflect their capacity to cope with extreme environmental changes but also offer a spark of insight into new possibilities for ecological growth and living spaces in contemporary society.

Founded in Taichung, Litart Circus Studio is a collective that specializes in Contemporary circus, Contemporary Dance , and Object Theatre. In recent years, they have devoted themselves to a “In situ public space Creation Project” and currently serve as a resident team at the Taichung Social Innovation Experimental Base.
Their work frequently integrates issues of public space with explorations of a city’s spiritual fabric, employing site-specific creation, contemporary dance, circus, and other forms to produce performances that interweave public space perspectives with the human body. In their recent creative endeavors, they focus on the ecosystem of the island’s “bodily landscape,” reexamining how people and nature recalibrate in a post-pandemic environment. They also explore the myriad possibilities arising from the profound resetting of mental, physical, and spatial relationships to the land.
